Electrical Box Mural Project Call to Artists

The City of Coos Bay and The Coos Bay Downtown Association are working together to create murals on electrical boxes at 5 different sites in the downtown area. In an effort to beautify our downtown, showcase local talent and create a draw to local businesses, this three-phased project will result in many electrical boxes being hand-painted by local artists.

Details:
Each site has boxes with different dimensions. Three of those sites have MULTIPLE boxes and will be painted on all 4 sides (leaving the Pacific Power stickers visible).
Phase 1 theme is ‘Under the Sea and Tidepools’ and the color palette is green/blue/purple/white.

Artists will be supplied with the following: paint (in a limited palette for maintenance ease and visual cohesiveness), brushes, rags, buckets, and water. Artists need to be prepared to work on uneven surfaces. Artists will be supplied with a special paint that coats metal. Artists are responsible for any supplemental supplies they choose to bring.

Artists will receive a $100 stipend.

Artists’ Scope of Work:

Submit digital or physical images of original works intended for specific electrical boxes (dimensions to be included with image). Images may be used for promotional materials before and after the event, but images will be returned to the artists.
Artists must be available on June 4th to paint the mural and the day reserved for backup, June 18th in case more time is needed or the 4th has poor weather. You will be notified by May 16th if your design has been chosen.

Eligibility:
Open to all artists producing original works of themed art for the project and who are available to paint the mural during the scheduled times.
Submissions (digital or physical) must be original in concept, composition, and execution. The image should be in color (medium of your choice) and use the color palette described above. Submissions must be a color rendering of what the artist is prepared to apply to the box and not, simply an example of the type of work created by the artist.

Submission requirements:

A minimum of 1 and a maximum of 5 artworks may be submitted per artist.
Submissions must be received by the committee no later than May 10th
Submissions by digital files on a flash drive or memory card must be in jpg format with a minimum of 300dpi and approximately 5” x 7” – 8” x 10”. All devices must be labeled, on the outside, with the artist’s name, the title of work, media used, and intended final dimensions. Physical submissions must be approximately 9” x 12” – 20” x 30” and labeled on the back with the artist’s name, the title of work, media used, and intended final dimensions.
